Thermostat repair and diagnostic for smart, programmable, and legacy mechanical thermostats. Wiring troubleshooting, C-wire retrofits, sensor calibration, and HVAC system integration diagnostics.
Common thermostat issues
1. LOOSE WIRING: thermostat wires push into terminals. Vibration or aging can loosen the connection. Symptom: intermittent operation, random cycling. Fix: tighten connections, sometimes rewire. $99-$180.
2. FAILED SENSOR: temperature sensor drifts out of calibration. Symptom: room feels hotter/cooler than the setpoint says. Fix: recalibrate if possible, replace if not. $180-$280.
3. C-WIRE MISSING (smart thermostats): smart thermostats need constant power. Missing C-wire causes reboot loops or battery-drain-and-die cycles. Fix: run new C-wire from furnace board. $150-$250.
4. DUAL-FUEL WIRING (heat pump + furnace): incorrect thermostat wiring causes the wrong equipment to run. Symptom: heat pump running when furnace should take over, or vice versa. Fix: rewire per manufacturer's dual-fuel spec. $180-$280.
Some 'thermostat failures' are actually HVAC system failures that look like thermostat problems. Diagnostic distinguishes.
The service call
Same-day response for HVAC-non-responsive calls. Emergency response if system is stuck running (overheating) or stuck off (no heat/cool).
Test wiring at both ends (thermostat and HVAC control board). Sensor calibration verification. C-wire presence check. System integration verified against manufacturer wiring diagram.
Straight pricing. C-wire retrofit quoted separately if needed.
Fix executed. HVAC system tested through full cycle (heating, cooling, fan-only). Thermostat programming restored. App reconnection if smart.
Repair vs upgrade
Legacy programmable thermostats (10+ years old) rarely justify repair — the replacement is $99-$189 for a solid programmable, $200-$300 for a smart thermostat. Repair on old units often costs more than replacement.
Smart thermostats under 5 years: usually repair. Manufacturer warranty covers many failures, and the initial install investment was significant.
Any thermostat with a cracked screen, dead pixels, or physical damage: replace, don't repair.
Any thermostat that's been intermittent for weeks/months without a clear cause: replace. Sometimes the cheapest 'diagnostic' is the swap-and-see approach on cheap units. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation and AC repair.
