Heat pump repair for reversing valve issues, defrost cycle problems, refrigerant charge, outdoor unit fan and coil work. Cold-climate models from Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Carrier and Rheem. Same diagnostic technicians who install them.
Heat pump-specific failures
1. REVERSING VALVE: the valve that switches between cooling and heating modes. When stuck, the unit only works in one mode. Diagnostic: coil temperature differential test. Replacement: $650-$950 including refrigerant recovery/recharge.
2. DEFROST BOARD/CYCLE: heat pumps periodically defrost their outdoor coil in winter. When the defrost board fails, ice builds up and heating capacity drops. Board replacement: $280-$450.
3. OUTDOOR FAN MOTOR: same as AC — fan motor fails, no airflow across the coil. Replacement: $350-$550.
4. REFRIGERANT UNDERCHARGE: cold-climate models are sensitive to charge. Leaks or slow degradation drops capacity. Leak search + repair + recharge: $450-$850.
Beyond these, heat pumps share failure modes with AC systems (capacitors, contactors, compressor). Diagnostic covers all failure types systematically. Related in Las Vegas: heat pump installation, heat pump repair, and AC installation.
The service call
Winter no-heat calls on heat pumps prioritized. Backup heat (electric or gas) status noted. Arrival window disclosed on phone.
Test in heating mode + cooling mode to identify if failure is universal (capacitor, fan) or mode-specific (reversing valve). Defrost cycle verification. Refrigerant pressures both modes.
Straight pricing before repair. Manufacturer warranty parts flagged if applicable (typical 10-year parts coverage on cold-climate models under 10 years old).
Part replaced. System commissioned in both heating and cooling modes. Defrost cycle verified. Backup heat lockout timers re-checked.
Winter emergency reality
Modern cold-climate heat pumps are reliable, but they're not infallible. When one fails during a Las Vegas cold snap, the backup heat (electric baseboards or gas furnace) has to carry the household.
During heat pump repair season (typically January-February for winter failures), we prioritize sites where the backup heat has also failed. If your heat pump is down but your gas furnace is fine, you're comfortable until we arrive. If both are down, that's an emergency response.
For homes with dual-fuel setups (heat pump + gas furnace backup), we verify the automatic changeover thermostat is switching properly during every repair visit — a common overlooked failure that keeps the heat pump running when the furnace should take over.

Heat pump was icing over and heating capacity dropped. They diagnosed a failed defrost board, replaced it under manufacturer parts warranty, only charged us the labour. Icing stopped immediately.
Unit was stuck in cooling mode in mid-winter. Reversing valve had failed. They confirmed with coil temperature test, replaced the valve, recharged refrigerant. Heating back on same day.
Heat pump capacity was dropping over months. Ran electronic leak search + UV dye, found a small leak at a service port. Repaired the port, recharged the refrigerant. System back to full capacity.
Heat pump was running when the furnace should have taken over below -8°C. They diagnosed a thermostat wiring issue, re-wired the changeover circuit. Furnace now kicks in properly on cold days.
