Backup heat matters more than heat pump uptime
Modern cold-climate heat pumps are reliable, but they're not infallible. When one fails during a Las Vegas cold snap, the backup heat (electric baseboards or gas furnace) has to carry the household.
During heat pump repair season (typically January-February for winter failures), we prioritize sites where the backup heat has also failed. If your heat pump is down but your gas furnace is fine, you're comfortable until we arrive. If both are down, that's an emergency response.
For homes with dual-fuel setups (heat pump + gas furnace backup), we verify the automatic changeover thermostat is switching properly during every repair visit — a common overlooked failure that keeps the heat pump running when the furnace should take over.

Not necessarily. Cold-climate heat pumps ice up as part of normal operation and defrost themselves every 30-90 minutes. Concerning: ice that stays for hours without a defrost cycle, or ice covering the entire outdoor coil. That points to a failed defrost board or refrigerant issue. We diagnose the defrost cycle during the service call.
Depends on the model. Cold-climate models (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Fujitsu XLTH) maintain heat capacity to -25°C. Standard heat pumps lose capacity below -8°C and rely on backup heat. If your unit is a cold-climate model and losing capacity above -20°C, refrigerant charge or defrost cycle needs attention.
Modern cold-climate models: 15-20 years with annual maintenance. Older units (pre-2015): 10-12 years typical. Coastal regions where salt air corrodes the outdoor coil: shorter. Las Vegas's inland climate is kind to outdoor equipment.
Most cold-climate heat pumps carry a 10-year parts warranty from the manufacturer. Labour warranty from the installer is typically 1 year. For units under 10 years old that failed due to a defective part, we file the warranty claim with the manufacturer and charge you only the labour.
