MERV 8 to MERV 16 filter upgrades for Las Vegas homes. Filter housing modifications for high-MERV filters that don't restrict blower airflow. Scheduled filter replacement service so you never run a dirty filter.
MERV explained
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates filter effectiveness at trapping particulates from 1 (worst) to 20 (HEPA hospital-grade). Residential HVAC typically uses MERV 6-16.
MERV 6-8 (basic pleated): traps large particles (dust, lint). Cheap ($5-$15 each). Almost no airflow restriction. Fine for basic filtration when someone changes it every 3 months.
MERV 11-13: traps most pollen, dust mite waste, mold spores, some bacteria. $15-$40 per filter. Slight airflow restriction — most modern furnaces handle it. Recommended for allergy/asthma households.
MERV 14-16: traps very fine particles (some viruses, fine dust). $40-$100 per filter. Meaningful airflow restriction — may require a wider filter housing to avoid overworking the blower.
Higher MERV isn't automatically better — if the filter restricts airflow, blower motor works harder, efficiency drops, and the coil doesn't get proper airflow. Right MERV depends on the specific home and system. Related in Las Vegas: furnace installation, furnace repair, and furnace tune-up.
How service works
Current filter dimensions noted. Current MERV rating and change frequency reviewed. IAQ symptoms discussed to determine right MERV target.
Right MERV level recommended. If wider filter housing needed, quoted separately. Filter replacement schedule set (3, 6, or 12 months depending on MERV + household).
New filter installed. Filter housing modified if MERV 14+ requires it. Written filter size and MERV logged on unit for future reference.
Optional scheduled filter replacement — we deliver and install the right filter at each change interval. Never run a dirty filter. Included in maintenance plans.
When to change filters
The "change your filter every month" advice was for cheap 1-inch fibreglass filters (MERV 4-6) that clogged fast. Modern MERV 8-13 pleated filters last much longer.
MERV 8 pleated 1-inch: every 3 months. MERV 11 pleated 1-inch: every 3 months. MERV 13 pleated 4-inch: every 6-9 months. MERV 16 pleated 4-inch: every 6-12 months.
Households with pets change filters ~30% more often (pet dander clogs filters). Homes near construction sites or dusty conditions: monthly during dusty periods. Homes with allergy sufferers: on the shorter end of the interval range.
Simplest rule: hold the filter up to a light every month. If light passes through easily, keep going. If most light is blocked, change it. Don't run a clogged filter — it reduces system efficiency and life. Related in Las Vegas: free quote, HVAC FAQs, and maintenance plans.

Upgraded from MERV 8 to MERV 11 with 4-inch housing. Airflow same as before, air noticeably cleaner. Filter changes now every 6 months instead of 3.
They modified our filter housing to fit 4-inch MERV 13 filters. Better filtration, way less frequent changes. Simple upgrade, big improvement.
Scheduled filter delivery is worth every penny. Correct MERV, correct size, correct interval — I never have to think about it. Never run a dirty filter.
Asked about upgrading to MERV 16. They talked me out of it — said MERV 13 was better fit for my home. Saved me money, gave better result.
