Why convert

Las Vegas BBQ gas hookup

Every BBQ enthusiast in Las Vegas has been there — tank runs out mid-cook, dinner sits half-grilled, someone runs to the hardware store for a swap. Permanent natural gas hookup ends that problem. Endless fuel supply from your utility gas, no tank storage, no swap-outs, cheaper per BTU than propane.

For built-in outdoor kitchens, gas hookup is the only practical choice — running propane tanks under a permanent structure is code-restricted and impractical. New builds and renos regularly include a gas stub for future BBQ hookup even when the grill itself is portable.

Modern BBQs are almost all convertible between propane and natural gas — the burners and orifices are different but the manufacturer's conversion kit ($40-$120) handles the swap. Existing propane BBQ can typically be converted plus permanently hooked up for less than a new BBQ replacement. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation, AC repair, and gas piping install.

How your Las Vegas HVAC install or service call works — four steps, no surprises

  1. Route + BTU assessment

BBQ BTU rating verified. Route from meter to backyard scoped (through wall, buried, or ceiling). Existing trunk size checked. Coupler location selected.

  2. gas permit

Gas permit filed. Written quote covers pipe, coupler, meter shutoff labour, appliance conversion kit if applicable.

  3. Install (half day)

Pipe run from meter along the planned route. Quick-connect coupler installed at the BBQ location. Pressure-tested at 60 psi for 30 min minimum. BBQ conversion (propane to natural gas) if applicable.

  4. Inspection + first cook

final safety inspection. Line purged of air. First flame test with combustion analysis. Post-install walkthrough of shutoff valve location and coupler operation.

Underground vs surface

Route options for backyard gas lines

SURFACE-RUN: pipe runs along the exterior wall down to grade, then along a fence line or patio edge to the BBQ location. Cheapest option ($650-$950). Downside: visible pipe unless hidden by landscaping.

BURIED: pipe goes underground in a code-compliant trench (18" minimum depth with tracer wire). Best-looking option. Adds $300-$600 to cost depending on trenching difficulty. Best for permanent installations under patios or in visible sight lines.

CEILING RUN: pipe runs through basement ceiling to exterior wall, out through the wall at BBQ height. Best for houses where the meter is on the opposite side of the house from the BBQ location. Requires drywall access in the finished ceiling. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation, AC repair, and free quote.

Built-in stone BBQ station on the patio needed a buried gas line. They trenched, laid pipe with tracer wire, and back-filled cleanly. Patio looks like nothing was ever dug up.

Wanted the flexibility to move the BBQ around the deck. Quick-connect coupler lets me disconnect the grill and roll it wherever. Coupler is watertight for winter storage.
