Las Vegas heat pump maintenance — semi-annual, both modes tested

Annual (or twice-a-year) heat pump maintenance covering refrigerant charge, defrost cycle verification, coil cleaning, reversing valve function test, and backup heat lockout check. Best booked spring and fall.

  • Spring cooling + fall heating checks
  • Defrost cycle verified
  • Manufacturer warranty compliance

Two modes =

Heat pumps work in both directions

Unlike a standard AC (cooling only) or furnace (heating only), a heat pump reverses its refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling. That means twice the wear on components and twice the diagnostic surface area. We recommend spring and fall service — spring for cooling-mode readiness, fall for heating-mode readiness.

For Las Vegas's dual-fuel setups (heat pump primary + gas furnace backup), maintenance also covers the changeover thermostat and balance-point temperature. Wrong changeover means the heat pump runs when the furnace should, or vice versa — inefficient and expensive.

Cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Fujitsu XLTH) have a 10-year parts warranty conditional on annual maintenance by a licensed technician. Skipping a year can void a $2,000+ compressor claim.

What the service covers

How your Las Vegas HVAC install or service call works — four steps, no surprises

  1. Both-mode inspection

System tested in cooling mode + heating mode. Refrigerant pressures verified both directions. Reversing valve function confirmed. Defrost cycle tested (critical for winter operation).

  2. Coil cleaning

Outdoor coil cleaned with coil cleaner + rinse. Indoor coil inspected. Condensate line cleared. Filter replaced. Airflow verified at return registers.

  3. Backup heat check

For dual-fuel systems: changeover thermostat and balance-point temperature verified. Backup heat lockout timers checked. Furnace briefly tested as backup source.

  4. Written service record

Detailed service report with both-mode readings, refrigerant pressures, and warranty paperwork filed with manufacturer if applicable.

Warranty is conditional

Skip maintenance and the manufacturer denies claims

The 10-year cold-climate heat pump parts warranty is conditional. Manufacturer contract language: 'Compressor warranty valid only with annual maintenance performed by a licensed HVAC technician, documented in service records.' Missing a year of maintenance and a compressor failure at year 7 = warranty denied = $2,000+ out of pocket.

This is why we file maintenance paperwork directly with the manufacturer for every service call. Every visit gets a service report emailed the same day; the report goes to your account for warranty purposes.

For customers on the semi-annual maintenance plan, all warranty coordination is handled automatically. If a warranty claim comes up during the plan period, we file it and manage the manufacturer follow-up. Related in Las Vegas: heat pump repair.

Compressor started acting up at year 6. Because they had documented all our previous maintenance, warranty claim went through smoothly. Only paid labour.

4-zone ductless heat pump. They service all 4 indoor heads plus the outdoor unit in a single visit. Consistent, thorough work every year.

Fall service revealed the changeover setpoint was wrong on our dual-fuel system. Adjusted, and heat pump now handles more shoulder-season heating instead of firing the furnace early.
