Why gas heaters

The only fast heat for a Las Vegas pool

For Las Vegas's short swim season (mid-May to mid-September in a typical year), fast heating matters. A gas pool heater raises a 30,000-gallon inground pool by about 1°F per hour at 400k BTU — meaning a pool at 55°F reaches 75°F in about 20 hours. Solar heating is much cheaper to run but takes days to accomplish the same rise. Heat pump pool heaters split the difference — cheaper to run than gas but slower to heat, and they stop working below ~50°F ambient.

For opening the pool in May or heating a cold spell in July, gas is the only practical answer. For maintaining temperature once the pool is warm, heat pump pool heaters make excellent complements (some homes install both — gas for fast heat, heat pump for maintenance).

Sizing matters. A 300k BTU heater is right for pools up to ~25,000 gallons. Above that, step up to 400k BTU. Undersized heaters run 24/7 and never quite reach target temperature; oversized heaters cycle too fast and waste fuel. Related in Las Vegas: heat pump repair.

Install day

Two-day install for most pool heaters

  1. Pool + gas assessment

Pool volume calculated. Heater BTU sized to volume + target rise. Gas line size from meter checked against added load. Route to pool pad scoped.

  2. Permits

local safety authority gas permit + municipal building permit if the heater location requires a shed or enclosure. Written quote covers all permits and inspections.

  3. Day 1 — Gas + pad

Concrete pad poured or existing pad prepped. Dedicated gas line run from meter to pool pad. Pipe pressure-tested at 60 psi for 30 min.

  4. Day 2 — Heater + commission

Heater set on pad. Gas connected. Water plumbing tied into pool circulation loop. Startup, combustion analysis, first-cook test with target temperature reached.

Operating cost realities

Las Vegas gas pool heater install

A 300k BTU gas pool heater burns about 3 cubic metres of natural gas per hour at full fire. At Las Vegas's current gas rate that's roughly $1.50-$2.00 per hour of runtime. Bringing a cold pool up to swim temperature can take 15-25 hours depending on volume and ambient — call it $25-$50 per heat-up.

Maintaining a warm pool is much cheaper because the heater only fires when temperature drops from ambient losses. For a typical Las Vegas July with a solar cover on overnight, maintenance runs about $80-$150 per month.

The economics: if you use the pool 3+ times per week during summer, a gas heater is well worth it — extends the season by 4-6 weeks (opening in mid-May instead of late June, closing in late September instead of early September). Occasional pool users may want to consider a smaller heat pump heater with a solar cover instead. Related in Las Vegas: heat pump repair and maintenance plans.

Pool heater FAQs

Las Vegas HVAC installation pool heater installation questions answered

300k BTU heater with dedicated gas line under 30 ft from meter: $4,500-$6,500. 400k BTU heater with longer gas line runs: $6,500-$8,500. Concrete pad, gas permit, and municipal permits all included. Water plumbing tie-in to existing pool loop included.
Standard install with existing pool pad: 1-2 days. Day 1: gas line run + pad prep. Day 2: heater set + connections + commissioning. Complex installs (long buried gas runs, custom pad build): 3-4 days.
Rule of thumb: 300k BTU for pools up to 25,000 gallons; 400k BTU for pools 25-45,000 gallons; step up further for larger. Volume calculation accounts for surface area and depth. Faster heat-up demands larger BTU. We calculate exactly during the assessment.
Usually no — pool heaters draw 300-400k BTU, which is more than a typical residential gas trunk can handle alongside furnace + water heater + range. Dedicated gas line from the meter is the standard approach. Existing trunk upsize is possible but often more expensive than a dedicated line.
For maintaining temperature: heat pump pool heaters are 3-5x cheaper to run than gas. For fast heat-up: they can't compete with gas. Best answer for many pools: install both — gas for opening/emergencies, heat pump for maintenance. We quote both if asked.

Wanted to open the pool in early May instead of late June. Installed a Raypak 406k BTU. Pool goes from 55°F to 78°F in a day. Season extended by nearly 6 weeks.

Installed a Hayward gas heater + a smaller heat pump. Gas for opening the pool and after storm cold snaps, heat pump for daily maintenance. Gas bill for pool use is way down.

Existing gas trunk couldn't handle the 300k BTU pool heater load. They ran a dedicated line all the way from the meter around the house and back to the pool. Clean routing, no visible pipe from the pool deck.

Dedicated gas line + pad
★★★★★

Old pool heater died mid-summer. Replaced within 3 days with a Jandy JXi 400. Heater is quieter than the old one and runs at higher efficiency. Full swim season saved.
