Whole-home humidifiers for Las Vegas winter comfort — 40% RH target. Whole-home dehumidifiers for basements and shoulder-season humidity. Bypass, fan-powered and steam models from Aprilaire, Honeywell and Carrier.
Why Las Vegas winter
Las Vegas winter outdoor air holds almost no moisture. When you heat that dry air, indoor relative humidity often drops to 15-25% — desert-dry. Symptoms are familiar: cracked lips, static shocks, dry cough, worse eczema, hardwood floors shrinking and gaps opening.
The comfort and health target is 40% relative humidity. A properly-sized whole-home humidifier connects to your furnace, senses indoor RH, and adds moisture to the air stream when needed. Runs quietly, uses about 3 gallons of water per day during peak.
Three humidifier types: BYPASS ($650-$900) simplest, uses furnace airflow. FAN-POWERED ($900-$1,200) higher capacity, includes its own fan. STEAM ($1,400-$2,400) highest output, most precise humidity control, works even when furnace fan isn't running. Right choice depends on home size and heating setup. Home size (sq ft), current heating system, water quality, RH measurements. Recommendation between bypass, fan-powered, or steam based on capacity needed.
Humidifier model, install labour, water line connection, drain line, humidistat wiring, and any electrical work needed for steam models.
Humidifier mounted on supply or return duct. Water line teed from cold-water plumbing (small copper line). Drain line routed to floor drain. Humidistat mounted or wired to smart thermostat.
System turned on. Target RH set (typically 40% winter, off in summer). Water flow confirmed. Homeowner shown how to adjust settings and change the water panel annually.
Dehumidifier when needed
Las Vegas summers can push indoor RH above 60% — comfortable is 40-50%. AC does some dehumidification, but on cool-humid days (May/June, September) AC doesn't run and humidity builds. Basements are especially prone (cool concrete + evaporative moisture).
Whole-home dehumidifiers ($1,800-$3,200 installed) tie into the ductwork and remove moisture independent of the AC. Portable dehumidifiers work for single rooms; whole-home units cover the whole house from one central unit.
For basement-only humidity issues, a dedicated basement dehumidifier ($1,200-$1,800 installed) is often the right answer. For whole-home humidity control, a duct-mounted whole-home dehumidifier is the fit. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation and AC repair.

Installed a fan-powered humidifier when our hardwood floors were shrinking in winter. Gaps closed within 3 weeks of proper humidity. Best investment I've made in our home.
Went with a steam humidifier for our 4,000 sq ft home. Precise humidity control, works even when furnace fan is off. Kids' eczema improved noticeably.
Bypass humidifier — simple, quiet, effective. Winter static shocks and dry cough all gone. Water panel swap once a year, that's it for maintenance.
Basement was constantly humid in summer. Whole-home dehumidifier handles it invisibly. Ducted into the AC return, moisture just goes away.
