Smart thermostats need constant 24V power (the 'C-wire' or common wire). Most Las Vegas homes built before 2010 don't have one — the old mercury or basic programmable thermostat only used the R, Y, W wires. Modern smart thermostats installed without a C-wire either don't work reliably, or run on batteries that die every few months, or try to steal power from the heat call (which cycles your HVAC).
The proper fix is a C-wire retrofit — running a new wire from the furnace board to the thermostat. That's 30-45 minutes of work in most homes and gets included in the install price. Battery power packs and 'wire adapter' devices are sold as workarounds but they're band-aids that cause reliability issues down the line.

For 95%+ of smart thermostats: yes. If your existing thermostat is battery-powered or only uses 3-4 wires, a C-wire retrofit is likely needed. We check during the assessment and include the C-wire run in the install quote if applicable. Adds 30-45 minutes of labour.
Yes — Ecobee Premium and Nest Learning both handle dual-fuel transitions (heat pump primary, gas furnace backup) with programmable balance-point temperatures. Some cheaper smart thermostats don't handle dual-fuel properly — we confirm compatibility during the assessment before quoting.
Straightforward swap (existing C-wire, compatible system): 30-45 minutes including Wi-Fi setup and demo. C-wire retrofit: 60-90 minutes. New install on new system: bundled with furnace/AC/heat pump install with no separate labour charge.
