Convert existing wood fireplace or build a new gas fireplace
Two common paths: dropping a gas insert into an existing masonry wood-burning fireplace, or building a new direct-vent linear fireplace on an exterior wall. Insert conversions cost less ($4,500-$7,500) because the chimney and hearth already exist. New direct-vent builds ($7,500-$14,000) offer more design flexibility — linear glass fronts, mantel styling, and placement anywhere on an exterior wall.
Modern direct-vent fireplaces are highly efficient (70-83% AFUE) because they draw combustion air from outside and vent through a sealed pipe. They can be zoned as supplemental heat for the room they're in, cutting furnace runtime for the rest of the house during shoulder seasons.
For homes with existing gas lines running to the basement (for furnace or water heater), extending a gas line to the fireplace location typically costs $400-$800. Homes without existing gas service need a new gas line run from the meter — $1,200-$2,500 depending on distance.

Cut furnace runtime by heating just the room
The efficiency benefit of gas fireplaces isn't just the fireplace's AFUE — it's the ability to heat just one room instead of the whole house. In shoulder seasons (October, April, early May), running the fireplace in the living room while turning the whole-house thermostat down 4-5°F cuts furnace runtime dramatically.
For Las Vegas homes with open-plan living areas, a well-sized fireplace can supply enough heat to keep the main floor comfortable most spring and fall evenings without the furnace running at all. Winter still needs the furnace as primary heat, but the fireplace continues to supplement.

No — modern direct-vent gas fireplaces use a sealed concentric pipe (combustion air in, exhaust out) that vents through any exterior wall or through the roof. Existing masonry chimneys can be used but aren't required. Chimney relining is required if using an existing chimney to vent.
Napoleon (Canadian, wide range, good value), Heat & Glo (premium, high-end aesthetics), Regency (reliable, standard mid-range), Valor (specializes in linear/contemporary looks) all install well in Las Vegas. We recommend based on your style preference, budget and expected heat output — not a fixed brand loyalty.
Standalone gas fireplaces: no significant rebate programs currently. The exception: if you're converting a wood fireplace and adding a high-efficiency gas insert as part of a broader regional utility rebate energy retrofit, the fireplace can be included in the qualifying scope.
