Cold-climate heat pumps heat AND cool a Las Vegas home efficiently down to -25°C. Stackable federal energy rebate + regional utility rebates + provincial rebates make heat pumps the most-subsidized HVAC upgrade in Canada right now.
Why heat pumps
Modern cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Fit, Carrier Infinity, Rheem RA20) maintain heating capacity down to -25°C. For Las Vegas, that covers 95%+ of winter hours without needing backup heat. In deep cold snaps, an electric or gas backup takes over the last few percent.
The install pays back faster than a straight furnace + AC replacement because rebates cover 40-50% of the equipment cost. federal energy rebate (0% interest, 10-year term) covers up to $40,000. local gas utility Home Efficiency Rebate Plus adds up to $6,500. Provincial rebates stack on top when active.
Right-sizing is critical. A too-big heat pump loses efficiency in shoulder seasons and can't run at partial load. Our Manual J load calc includes a balance-point analysis showing exactly at what outdoor temperature backup heat kicks in — so the system runs efficiently the other 340 days a year.
Install day
60-minute assessment measures heating and cooling load. Balance-point analysis identifies the temperature at which backup heat takes over. Written quote covers post-rebate net cost.
Energy advisor coordination for pre-retrofit audit (required for regional utility rebate). federal energy rebate pre-approval walked through. Post-rebate cash + monthly cost both quoted.
Outdoor unit set on pad, indoor coil installed on furnace plenum or as air handler, refrigerant lines run and vacuum-purged, R-410A or R-454B charged. Electrical panel work if needed.
Cooling and heating modes both tested. Backup heat cutover verified. Rebate paperwork filed within 48 hours. Post-install energy audit scheduled (local gas utility requirement).
The rebate math
Federal Canada federal energy rebate Loan: 0% interest, 10-year term, up to $40,000. Available for heat pump installs paired with energy audits. Covers the equipment and install labour.
local gas utility Home Efficiency Rebate Plus: up to $6,500 for a cold-climate heat pump on the natural gas network, when combined with envelope upgrades (insulation, air sealing). Requires pre-retrofit energy audit.
Provincial rebates cycle in and out — we track them and quote to whichever is currently active. The rebate stack lands most Las Vegas homeowners' out-of-pocket heat pump cost in the $4,500-$9,000 range, financed at 0% over 10 years. That's monthly-cheaper than most furnace replacements.

Kept our newer furnace as backup and added a Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat. First winter, the heat pump handled everything down to about -18°C before the furnace kicked in for maybe 6 days total. Gas bill was cut in half.
Older furnace + AC both nearing end of life. They quoted the full switch with rebate stack. Post-rebate cost was $6,200 total, financed at 0% over 10 years. Monthly cost is less than we were spending on gas + electricity before.
The rebate stacking was confusing until they laid it out step by step. Energy advisor came for pre-audit, install went in, post-audit followed 10 days later. Federal loan hit the account within 6 weeks.
Our Las Vegas century home has no ducts. They installed a 3-zone ductless heat pump — one head per floor. Living space is cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and the electric bill went down because we're not running electric baseboards anymore.
