Sizing the generator

Las Vegas standby generator install

WHOLE-HOME (14-22kW): powers everything in the house including AC, dryer, EV charger and full kitchen. Bigger unit, bigger transfer switch, higher gas load, higher upfront cost. Best for: homes where nobody has to think about what's plugged in.

ESSENTIAL-CIRCUIT (8-11kW): powers only the critical circuits — furnace, refrigerator, freezer, sump pump, some outlets, a few lights. Lower upfront cost. Best for: homes with tight budgets or in cottage/secondary property use.

The right answer depends on how you use the house and how bad Las Vegas's outages actually are. A quick history: ice storm outages 24-72 hours several times per decade, summer thunderstorm outages 4-12 hours annually. For homes with an EV, whole-home tips the balance because charging is a heavy load. For homes with a sump pump on flood-risk basement, essential-circuit is often enough. Install day

Three-day install for most standby generators

  1. Load + site assessment

Load calc for essential vs whole-home. Generator location scoped (setback from windows, clearance from combustibles). Gas line size verified. Municipal permit requirements confirmed.

  2. Written quote + permits

Line-item quote covers generator, transfer switch, gas line, concrete pad, electrical panel work. Municipal building permit + local safety authority gas permit + ESA electrical permit all filed.

  3. Days 1-2 — Install

Concrete pad poured. Generator set. Gas line run and pressure-tested. Transfer switch installed at main panel. Electrical connections made and inspected.

  4. Day 3 — Commission + test

Grid outage simulation to verify automatic startup and transfer. Load bank test at rated capacity. Cellular/Wi-Fi monitoring set up with manufacturer app. Post-install walkthrough.

Maintenance realities

Annual maintenance is non-negotiable

Standby generators sit unused for 99% of the year, then need to work perfectly during that 1% when the grid fails. That reliability requires strict annual maintenance: oil and filter change, air filter, spark plug check, valve adjustment, transfer switch cycling test.

We include the first-year maintenance visit in every install. After that, we offer annual maintenance plans ($240-$380 per year) that include the visit, priority response on emergency service, and remote monitoring alerts through the manufacturer's app.

Skip annual maintenance and the generator failure rate rises quickly. A generator that hasn't started in 18 months has maybe 50% odds of firing up on the first grid failure. Maintained generators have >99% cold-start reliability. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation.

Generator FAQs

Las Vegas HVAC installation standby generator installation questions answered

Essential-circuit 10-11kW: $8,000-$11,000. Whole-home 14-22kW: $11,000-$16,000. Includes generator, transfer switch, gas line, concrete pad, electrical panel work, and all three permits (municipal + local safety authority + ESA). Financing available.
2-3 days end-to-end. Day 1: concrete pad + generator set + gas line rough-in. Day 2: transfer switch install + electrical panel work + inspections. Day 3: commissioning + load bank test + walkthrough. Timing depends on inspection scheduling with municipal + local safety authority + ESA — usually straightforward but occasionally slower.
Not if you have natural gas service — the generator runs off your existing utility gas. Propane installations need a dedicated tank (500-gallon minimum for whole-home extended use). Diesel: rare for residential in Las Vegas, and needs a fuel tank + fuel management.
Modern models: 62-68 dB at 7 metres (about as loud as a running dishwasher inside a house or a normal outdoor AC condenser). Placement matters — we scope the location to meet the province municipal noise bylaws (typically no closer than 3m from a bedroom window, 1m from a property line). Enclosure choices vary noise level by 4-6 dB.
Whole-home 20-22kW at minimum. Level 2 EV chargers draw 32-48A, which is a significant portion of a standby generator's capacity. If you want to charge the EV during an outage, we size for it explicitly. If you'd rather skip EV charging during outages, an 18kW works fine for the rest of the house.
