Why tankless

Las Vegas tankless water heater

Tankless water heaters don't store hot water — they heat it on demand. The trade-off is flow rate. A typical 199,000 BTU tankless (Rheem RTGH-95, Navien NPE-240A2) delivers about 9-11 GPM at 40°F rise. That's enough for 2 simultaneous showers plus one small fixture (kitchen tap or dishwasher).

Push beyond that (3 showers + dishwasher + laundry) and the flow rate drops per fixture, which means lukewarm water. For Las Vegas's cold incoming water temperature in winter (35-40°F), the flow rate is lower than the spec sheet number, so we size conservatively.

For large families or homes with high simultaneous demand, we install two units in parallel or recommend a hybrid setup (tankless + small buffer tank). This gets the endless hot water benefit without the flow-rate ceiling. Related in Las Vegas: water heater installation, tankless water heater, and free quote.

Install day

One-day install for most tankless conversions

  1. Flow + gas capacity check

Peak demand calc based on household size and fixtures. Gas line size verified (3/4" typical for 199k BTU units). Venting path evaluated for concentric or stainless direct vent.

  2. Written quote

Line-item quote covers unit, mounting bracket, gas line upsize if needed, concentric vent kit, condensate drain, permit and final inspection.

  3. Install day

Old tank drained and removed if converting. Wall bracket installed, unit mounted, gas line connected and pressure-tested, vent run, condensate drain plumbed to nearest drain, water lines connected.

  4. Commission + walkthrough

Combustion analysis, temperature verification at farthest fixture, controls demo, warranty registration, final safety inspection.

Cost + payback math

Las Vegas tankless water heater — Higher upfront, lower operating cost

A standard gas tank water heater install runs $1,400-$2,000 in Las Vegas. A tankless install runs $3,500-$5,500. That's a $2,000-$3,500 upfront premium.

Operating cost: tank water heaters lose 8-15% of their heat to standby losses (keeping the tank hot even when you're not using water). Tankless has zero standby loss. Annual gas savings: $80-$150 depending on household size.

Lifespan: tank heaters last 8-12 years. Tankless units last 15-20 years. So the $2,000-$3,500 premium spread over the extra 5-8 years of service life comes out to roughly break-even, PLUS the daily benefit of endless hot water and freed-up basement space. Not a pure cost decision — a comfort + longevity decision. Related in Las Vegas: AC installation and AC repair.

Tankless FAQs

Las Vegas HVAC installation tankless water heater installation questions answered

Yes for one or two simultaneous demands (shower + kitchen tap). Push beyond 2 hot-water demands at once and the flow rate per fixture drops, which the shower feels as lukewarm water. Las Vegas winter incoming water is cold (35-40°F), so the rated flow rate you see on the spec sheet is best-case summer conditions. Winter flow is 15-20% lower.
Gas tankless with existing 3/4" gas line and adequate venting path: $3,500-$4,500. Add $500-$1,500 if the gas line needs upsizing or the vent path needs new penetrations through the exterior wall. Electric tankless (rare for whole-home in Las Vegas because of electrical service size): $2,500-$3,800.
Yes — an annual descaling flush protects the heat exchanger from mineral scale (especially important in Las Vegas's hard-water areas). Skip the annual descale and the heat exchanger fails in 5-7 years instead of the 15-20 year normal lifespan. Descale runs about $190-$240 per visit.
Yes — for households with 5+ people or 3+ bathrooms with high simultaneous demand, we install two 199k BTU units in parallel (Rheem or Navien manifold setup). Each unit handles half the flow, doubling the peak capacity. Costs about 1.7x a single unit but delivers 2x the capacity.
For gas tankless: minimal rebate availability currently — the province retired most standalone tankless rebates. For heat-pump water heaters (a different product entirely): federal energy rebate covers up to $40,000 including the heat-pump water heater. We'll tell you which product qualifies before quoting.

Freed up 4 sq ft of basement floor space by removing the old tank and going tankless. Family of 4, never run out of hot water. Rheem Prestige unit runs quieter than the old tank did.

Older Las Vegas home needed a new vent path through the exterior wall. They coordinated with the mason for the penetration, installed cleanly, and there's zero condensation issue at the vent hood.

Family of 6 in a 4-bathroom home. They recommended two Navien units in parallel instead of one. Ran the flow calc, ordered the manifold kit, and now we can shower + laundry + dishwasher without anyone getting a cold surprise.

Second property with intermittent use — tank sitting empty most of the time was wasteful. Tankless was the right call for a place we're at 40 weekends a year. Zero standby loss when we're not there.
